Building a Vocational School

When Amma Darko received royalties for an article about Ghana in "Süddeutsche Zeitung" (German newspaper), she decided that she had to support a project in her country with it.

Through friends of hers, Prof. Veyhl and his wife, she learnt about the project in the Central Region of Ghana. The German NGO "Gold Coast" (external link) and the Ghanaian NGO "Yamoransa Community Association" are working hand in hand. Their first project is the erection of a vocational school  in Akatakyiwa/ Yamoransa.

Amma Darko donated 500 Euro to the "Yamoransa Community Association". With the money, the NGO bought furnishings and equipment. Without this donation, the NGO would not have been able to start the school already in September 2008.

In August 2008, Mrs. Darko visited the project.

The school offers vocational training for the those who usually cannot afford it. School fees are less than half of the usual amount and there are no extra costs. Even school uniform and exercise books are free. Apart from the complete certificate, the trainees can also obtain a proficiency certificate. This is a chance for those who did not finish school.

Because of the lack of affordable education facilities, youngsters leave the rural areas and go to the cities, where they mostly end up as street children. The vocational centre in Akatakyiwa will motivate the trainees to stay in their villages.

On 22nd September 2008, lessons have started in the two departments: dressmaking and vehicle mechanics.
